The news that undisputed super lightweight champion Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano had agreed to meet for a third time was welcomed warmly throughout the boxing world.
The news that undisputed super lightweight champion Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano had agreed to meet for a third time was welcomed warmly throughout the boxing world.
Everywhere, that is, except Northamptonshire.
WBC interim super lightweight champion, Chantelle Cameron, has probably spent the last few months waiting for the announcement to drop but the confirmation still came as a disappointment.
In May 2023, then undisputed 140lb champion, Cameron, 20-1 (8 KOs), crossed the Irish Sea and battled her way to an exciting majority decision victory over Taylor. Six months later, the two renewed hostilities and the Irish legend produced arguably the best performance of her outstanding career to avenge her sole professional defeat and steal Cameron’s titles.
Rather than settling matters once and for all with Cameron, Taylor decided to rekindle another rivalry and engaged in a show stealing ten round war with Amanda Serrano on the undercard of Jake Paul’s eight round decision victory over the ghost of former heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson.
Taylor retained her titles with close but unanimous decision and - after first beating Serrano at lightweight in 2022 - went two ahead in their series.
After taking time to consider her options, Taylor, 24-1 (6 KOs), has once again bypassed Cameron and elected to face multi-weight champion, Serrano, 47-3-1 (31 KOs), for a third time. The two will headline an all female MVP event at Madison Square Garden on July 11th. The event will be streamed globally by Netflix.
Cameron has recorded two victories since her loss to Taylor but is desperate to get involved in another major event. Given the violent, back and forth nature of her first two fights with Serrano, Taylor certainly cant be accused of taking the easy option but, nonetheless, Cameron isn’t happy at being overlooked.
“Very frustrating. A trilogy is meant to be one one and there's only one person that's one one with Katie Taylor and that’s me so it is what it is,” she told Queensberry.
“At the end of the day, I have a win over Katie, Katie has a win over me and now she's running scared and that's how it is.”
