If early evidence is to believed, the sight of Charlie Senior launching into his post-fight celebratory backflip will become a regular sight over the coming years.
The 24-year-old junior lightweight was talented enough to win a bronze medal for Australia at the 2024 Olympic Games and has shown enough imagination, flair and power during his short professional career to suggest that he will be a factor for years to come.
"I was actually good at dancing. I won a couple of scholarships here and there but was a young boy dancing at the time, so it wasn't the 'it' thing," Senior told The Ring.
He returns against an opponent to be announced on the undercard of Ryan Garner's WBC interim junior lightweight title fight against Michael Magnesi in Southampton this weekend.
"There was a boxing gym next door to the dance studio so I was like, 'You know what, I'll give that a crack now,'"
"My feet don't seem to let me down so it's definitely come in handy with my footwork and reactions."
Senior (4-0, 2 KOs) was born in Bradford, northern England before moving to Perth in Western Australia when he was a toddler. After winning his bronze medal, he immediately decided leaving Australia would give him the best chance of translating his amateur success to the professional ranks and found his way back to England.
After spending time in a few gyms close to his roots up North, Senior decided to settle down with Alan Smith at the iBox gym on the outskirts of London where he trains alongside lightweight contender Sam Noakes and WBC junior featherweight champion Skye Nicolson.
"I did try a few gyms up north, some down south, and everyone was great," said Senior who, despite spending most of his life on the opposite side of the world, has somehow retained more than a hint of a Yorkshire accent.
"Everyone was lovely. I didn't have a lot of time because I'd just finished the Olympics and only had a month or whatnot just to get about, get my head sorted and knuckle down into where I want to be.
"I sat with Al Smith and Eddie Lam down at the iBox gym because they let me be me. They didn't try to change me too much. Not that anyone was trying to drastically change me but it just fit me a lot better."
So far, he looks extremely comfortable with his decision. Senior looks at home in the ring and clearly enjoys his work.
"I think if you're enjoying it, you can't go wrong. If you put in the work and you enjoy every bit of what you do, then it's written isn't it?" he said.
"I go out, I have a ball of a time every time I step out. I enjoy the walk, embrace the crowd, go in and just enjoy the fight, that's all I can do."
Every talented young amateur turns professional with hopes, dreams and ideas of one day ruling the world. For some, the reality of professional fighting and the grind of training every day quickly take their toll.
Senior has kept his eyes open and surveyed the British scene during his first year as a professional and is more confident than ever that he has what it takes to achieve his dreams.
"I think everyone is skilful, experienced. I think with my ability and knowing what I can do, I think there's no doubt I can get to where I want to go,” he said.
"I just want to be out. I want to be active and it'll all come for me. Get me out a few more times and I'm there. I know where I need to be, my ability will get me there."
The Gerbasi Corner honors longtime Ring Magazine and boxing contributor Tom Gerbasi, who passed away suddenly on Sept. 15, 2025. A 2024 Nat Fleischer Award winner for excellence in boxing journalism, Gerbasi took particular joy in telling the stories of up-and-coming and unheralded prospects in the sport.
