The heavyweight division is where Derek Chisora puts most of his attention.

However, he does have a bit of a soft spot for the lower weight classes. The speed, the skills and, in this case, the storylines, have captivated Chisora.

The outspoken British heavyweight grabbed himself a ringside seat Friday night in Times Square and watched Devin Haney make his return from a one-year layoff.

There were mixed thoughts on Haney’s performance against Jose Ramirez.

There seemed to be a large faction of the boxing community that didn’t enjoy watching him box and move his way to victory. There wasn’t much action in a 12-round fight Haney won by unanimous decision and Haney’s well-known jab wasn’t quite as prevalent as it had been in the past.

Chisora disagreed with Haney’s critics after he watched Haney (32-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) win nearly every second of every round versus Ramirez (29-3, 18 KOs). While the criticism has been loud, Chisora was impressed by a former undisputed lightweight champ he thinks looked as good as ever.

“That’s what you call boxing,” Chisora told The Ring. “If he boxes like that, he’s gonna be undisputed again.”

Haney, who fought Ramirez at 144 pounds and appears to be on the verge of going up to the welterweight division, has to figure out his next move.

A rematch with Ryan Garcia was supposed to be next, but Garcia didn’t hold up his end of the bargain, losing to Rolando “Rolly” Romero in the main event Friday night.

Still, Haney is a man with options, maybe even Garcia. When the plan for Haney’s next fight is unveiled, Chisora believes that the version of Haney we saw against Ramirez will pale in comparison to the version we’ll see next and for years to come.

“He’s just gonna get better and better and better now,” Chisora said.
