Canelo Alvarez has had several cantankerous build-ups for some of his most meaningful matchups, but the biggest enemy of his career is universally considered to be none other than Gennadiy Golovkin.
Alvarez and "Triple G" fought three times, and the Mexican star finished the series with a 2-0-1 record. The first two contests, in 2017 and 2018 respectively, were hotly-contested and ended in razor-thin decisions, while the 2022 trilogy resulted in a much clearer victory for Alvarez.
At 36, Alvarez is now operating in the twilight of his career, but he's still considered the best super middleweight in the world, even without a title. The Ring ranks Alvarez, a former two-time undisputed champion in the division, No. 1 in the weight class.
On October 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) aims to become a three-time 168-pound champion when he faces WBC titleholder Christian Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs), live on DAZN PPV.
To promote the fight, Mbilli is evoking memories of Alvarez's chief nemesis by stating knockout artist Golovkin's catchphrase.
"It's going to be a big drama show," Mbilli told Alvarez during a face-to-face conversation on DAZN. "It will be an incredible action fight.
"We're going to have some big action. He has to be focused every second. It's the perfect style to have a great show – be ready, the storm is coming."
Mbilli, a Cameroonian-French fighter based in Canada, then went on to say that his fighting style might as well mirror "El Tri."
"You see my style. I'm a Mexican-style fighter. I love the Mexican style," Mbilli said. "I like when a boxer comes to fight. I don't like it when a boxer runs away, you know … [After the fight] they are going to say I'm an amazing fighter and a great fighter they'd never seen before."
Mbilli is an all-action fighter who wages war whenever warranted, as evidenced by his performance in a firefight and majority draw against Lester Martinez in September 2025.
Mbilli defended his WBC interim super middleweight that night and was later elevated to full champion after Terence Crawford was stripped of the belt, three months after scoring a unanimous decision win against Alvarezon the same card.
"I was surprised [the fight was made], and I am very happy to hear that Canelo wanted to fight me," Mbilli said.
"It's an honor for me to fight Canelo. It's a big fight. I think it's a big fight for my career, and I'm very excited. I can't wait to be in the ring."
