Chev Clarke claimed the biggest win of his career on Saturday night but you would never have guessed it.
The 35-year-old underdog stopped former WBO champion Chris Billam-Smith, The Ring’s No. 3-rated cruiserweight, in the seventh round of their Zuffa Boxing main event at Copper Box Arena.
But there was no big celebration from the Jamaica-born former lorry driver, who insisted it was just another day at the office.
“It’s just another win,” he said. “It’s like you going to work and achieving what you need to achieve on a daily basis. I’m not a boxing fan, I’m just a guy who is decent at boxing and I get decent results.
“I don’t get a buzz, I’m not buzzing right now. I’m buzzing to go and see my friends and I’m buzzing that Arsenal won but it was just a fight. It’s done now.”
At the time of writing, former British champion Clarke (13-2, 10 KOs) is not rated inside the top 15 with any of the four major sanctioning bodies or inside The Ring’s top 10 at 200 pounds.
But this victory over Billam-Smith, in what was Clarke’s first ever main event fight, will likely open the door to an even bigger opportunity next.
When asked who he would like to face next, he said: “I’ll take all comers man, as long as the behind the scenes is right we make on the screen right.
“Bring them all, the harder they come the harder they fall.”
The victory moved Clarke to 3-0 against Billam-Smith (22-3, 14 KOs), given he beat him twice as an amateur in 2016. Despite losing those two fights, it was Billam-Smith who went on to win a world title as a professional.
Clarke said: “I don’t think Chris has changed much from then. That being said, Chris was a world champion so whatever he has obviously worked. Shout out to Chris. We’ve done it three times and people were entertained each time.”
But while Clarke can look forward to big 2027, it will be back to the drawing board for 36-year-old father-of-two Billam-Smith. In the immediate aftermath of the defeat, the Bournemouth man told Sky Sports he would be open to another crack at Clarke.
“I’m fine,” he said. “It was a good shot that buzzed me, obviously. It was a great shot and I made a mistake. I felt like I was winning the fight. Fair play to Chev, we’ve had three fights now and he’s got them all but I’d love to run it back and get him eventually.”
