Oscar Collazo might’ve inadvertently settled into his new weight class Saturday night.
Collazo called for a fight against unified 112-pound champion Ricardo Sandoval after he blew out overmatched Neider Valdez in a forced flyweight fight at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, California. The Puerto Rican southpaw dropped Valdez, a late replacement for Filipino strawweight contender Joey Canoy, three times on his way to recording a second-round knockout.
Collazo (15-0, 12 KOs), an 80-1 favorite versus Valdez, wants to test himself against much more formidable fighters. The Ring, WBA and WBO 105-pound champion mentioned unification fights against IBF champ Pedro Taduran (20-4-1, 14 KOs) and WBC titleholder Siyakholwa Kuse (10-3-1, 4 KOs) before he overwhelmed Valdez (15-4-3, 12 KOs).
The 29-year old Collazo, who is ranked No. 9 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, quickly turned his attention afterward to Sandoval (27-2, 18 KOs), who owns the WBA and WBC flyweight titles.
“I really want it,” Collazo told DAZN’s Chris Mannix in the ring. “It really interests me. I hope Oscar De La Hoya and [Erik] Gomez can see that through. I’m ready for it. I’m ready for the big fights. I’m ready to make history. You know, I was born for this. I’m a pound-for-pound champion and I’m ready for the big fights. And that’s the fight that I want.”
Oscar De La Hoya, whose Golden Boy Promotions represents Collazo and Sandoval, believes theirs is “the biggest, best fight out there for both guys.” The 27-year-old Sandoval, of Rialto, California, hasn’t boxed since he upset Japan’s Kenshiro Teraji (25-2, 16 KOs) by split decision in their 12-round championship clash July 30 in Yokohama.
“Oscar Collazo is a fighter who belongs in the top three, pound-for-pound, in the world today,” De La Hoya said. “That’s how skilled he is. He makes it look easy. But the real fight that we want – I wanna bring back that Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry that we always had back in the days with De La Hoya-Trinidad and Chavez-Camacho.
“I wanna do that [with Collazo] against Ricardo Sandoval, who is a tremendous, tremendous Mexican champion in two divisions up. So, I want Oscar Collazo to go up two weight divisions, and let’s do that fight live from Puerto Rico – or from Los Angeles.”
