Sometimes, all Eddie Hearn can do is sit back and laugh.
Throughout his 15-year career, the promoter has been front and centre to provide comment on various reports and rumors about his own fighters and that of other promoters.
Recently, a possible fight between Conor Benn and Shakur Stevenson has been talked about. The talk originally came from Stevenson. The former Olympic silver medalist stated he'd be willing to move up a couple of divisions for that sort of fight. There’s nothing harmful about a little hearsay but Hearn realizes that it could be more than just gossip.
“It’s funny, [Stevenson and Benn] were both texting me about the fight at the same time,” Hearn told Boxing News.
Stevenson and Benn are two completely different-sized men. Stevenson has fought as low as 126 pounds and holds the WBC’s 135-pound title. Benn, on the other hand, is much bigger. He doesn’t have a world title to his name but he is coming off a defeat to Chris Eubank Jr in his middleweight debut.
Stevenson doesn’t know what it’s like to lose. Benn, however, does. Now, he’s doing his best to get a bit of revenge.
Mario Barrios, Devin Haney, and even Jaron Ennis have been mentioned as possible targets but a rematch with Eubank Jr will likely take place next.
Stevenson, in the meantime, faces all-action contender William Zepeda at Ring III, The Ring's July 12 show in New York City.
Hearn loves himself a super-fight and Stevenson vs. Benn falls into that category. Nevertheless, Zepeda and Eubank Jr. is where the focus will be for his respective fighters. Both men are talented enough to spoil any future plans so Hearn wants to avoid any mishaps.
With that said, if there aren’t any slip-ups from either fighter, Hearn would be more than willing to make that fight immediately after.
“At the moment, Shakur’s got Zepeda, Conor’s got Eubank. After we’ll make it happen.”
