LOS ANGELES – The biggest boxing event and fight of the year will be the Riyadh Season showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford slated for September.
The super fight will feature a pitting between a pair of four-division champions and two of the greatest fighters of their generation. The 154-pound WBA title holder Crawford will climb up two weight divisions to potentially face Alvarez, who can be the undisputed super middleweight champion once again by then if he beats William Scull in the main event of a DAZN PPV on May 3.
The matchup between Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) and Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) stands on its own legs and is significant enough to take over the global sports landscape, but Crawford believes it can be even bigger.
One matchup in particular the 37-year-old Nebraska native is interested in providing chief support for his fight is the long-anticipated lightweight title unification clash between WBC champion Shakur Stevenson and WBA titlist Gervonta Davis.
“I don't know [about the undercard]. It's going to be crazy. It should be crazy,” Crawford told The Ring during an extensive and exclusive interview. “That would be dope. If Tank was not so cocky to be on a Terence Crawford undercard, that would be dope. But I don't see Tank taking a backseat to any fighter because he will think it's the Tank show. So I don't know. But it should be a good undercard.”
Crawford and Davis have been beefing in recent weeks, as both parties have gone off on each other with a series of diatribes and diabolical disses.
So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Crawford is siding with two of his closest confidants as being better than Davis.
“I don't think those guys can match what Shakur brings to the table,” said Crawford. “Shakur and [WBO lightweight champion] Keyshawn [Davis] are the two best in the division, hands down.”
