Promoter Frank Warren, who is behind the event, signed Dubois as a teenager and now believes a victory for the 27-year-old will transcend boxing in this country.
LONDON, England — Daniel Dubois brushed off Canelo Alvarez's $500,000 bet on him to lose against Oleksandr Usyk and insisted he is ready to write his own script at Wembley Stadium.
Dubois, who holds the IBF belt, is a wide betting underdog against The Ring, WBO, WBA and WBC champion Usyk ahead of their undisputed clash at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night set to headline a DAZN PPV.
Even Alvarez, the undisputed super middleweight champion, is hoping to cash in on the fight by placing a huge bet on Usyk to beat Dubois for a second time, 23 months on from his ninth-round victory against the Londoner in Poland.
But Dubois laughed it off when it was brought up at Thursday’s low-key final press conference which took place in Wembley Stadium’s great hall.
“It does not mean [anything] to me,” said Dubois of Canelo’s bet. “He’s going to lose his money.
“I’m just focused now, let’s get it on. I know what I’ve got to do, I’m a young lion and I just have to take over and be the man.”
Team Usyk have regularly claimed that Dubois is much the same fighter as he was at Stadion Wroclaw in 2023, when he was stopped. “How much can someone change in two years?” manager Egis Klimas asked.
But Dubois is adamant the requisite adjustments have been made in the gym and that he is ready to make a mockery of the bookmakers’ odds.
“I’ve been getting a lot of confidence from my training and what I've done in the gym,” he said, "and the shots I’ve landed on people in sparring. All of that is inside me and I’m ready to let it out of me now.
“I’m ready to come through whatever I need to go through to get those belts. I’m chasing glory and I’m chasing greatness.
“This is history making and I’ve just got to do a real demolition job. I’m hungry and ready for it. Right now I just want to get it on. They have a script, but I’m going to write my own script.
“I’m going to win these belts and I’m going to be the man.”
Around 90,000 fans are expected to cram into Wembley Stadium on Saturday as Dubois becomes the first fighter in history to headline at the national stadium in back-to-back fights following his September victory here over Anthony Joshua.
Promoter Frank Warren, who is behind the event, signed Dubois as a teenager and now believes a victory for the 27-year-old will transcend boxing in this country.
“This is such a phenomenal event with four belts on the line for the first time in the UK,” he said.
“This is Daniel’s chance to become one of Britain’s icons by winning those belts. He’s coming into his prime and he’s had great grounding if you look at his resume.
“I really do believe he’s going to do it, against one of the great champions of heavyweight boxing.”
