Danny Garcia might not retire afterward, but the two-division champion's next fight at Barclays Center in Brooklyn will be the last at that venue of a career that has spanned 18 years.
Danny Garcia will return one last time to the venue where many of his most meaningful fights occurred.
Garcia announced Wednesday that he’ll battle Daniel Gonzalez in a 10-round junior middleweight match October 18 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Philadelphia’s Garcia, 37, is winding down a career in which he won world titles at junior welterweight and welterweight.
Garcia didn’t state that this will be the last fight of a pro career he launched in November 2007, but he doesn’t plan to fight much longer. Erislandy Lara stopped Garcia after the ninth round of Garcia’s most recent bout – a fight for Lara’s WBA middleweight title almost a year ago at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
His loss to Lara, who dropped Garcia in the 9th round and led by big margins on all three scorecards, marked the first time Garcia lost by knockout in 41 professional fights. Though 1-2 in his past three fights and largely inactive for the past five years, Garcia (37-4, 21 KOs) is considered a big favorite over Queens’ Gonzalez (22-4-1, 7 KOs).
“The fans have supported me the whole way, since I first fought here, and have made Brooklyn feel like my home outside of Philly,” Garcia said in a press release distributed Wednesday. “There’s nothing like a big fight night at Barclays Center. I had to do this show for the fans and show them how much I’ve appreciated them this entire time.
“The best way to say goodbye is by fighting here one last time and giving them a tremendous night of boxing full of rising young talent. It’s gonna be the DSG show in Brooklyn once again on October 18!”
Garcia is 7-2 at Barclays Center since he first fought at the home arena of the NBA’s Nets in October 2012. He knocked out Mexican legend Erik Morales in the fourth round of their rematch that night.
Garcia later beat former champions Zab Judah, Lamont Peterson, Paulie Malignaggi and Robert Guerrero at Barclays Center. Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter also defeated Garcia in welterweight title fights there.
Tickets to this card, promoted by Garcia’s company, go on sale Thursday at 11 a.m. ET and can be bought via ticketmaster.com.
