David Benavidez has never wanted to be buddy-buddy with any of his opponents. He had a clear disdain for Anthony Dirrell, he wasn’t fond of Demetrius Andrade, and he flat-out despised Caleb Plant.
David Benavidez has never wanted to be buddy-buddy with any of his opponents. He had a clear disdain for Anthony Dirrell, he wasn’t fond of Demetrius Andrade, and he flat-out despised Caleb Plant.
Never, however, has his hatred for someone reached this level.
There’s something about David Morrell that rubs Benavidez the wrong way. From the way he talks to the way he walks, everything about him irritates Benavidez.
More than just his mannerisms, it was the perpetual trash talk that got under his skin. For years on end, the Cuban star and No. 8 ranked light heavyweight called Benavidez out. He clowned his skills, downplayed his abilities, and promised to KO him if he ever got the chance. Well, in just a few more days, Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) will finally get his wish when the two meet up at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
According to oddsmakers, pundits, and even fans, their showdown is a difficult one to predict. Benavidez though, doesn’t understand why. Once the opening bell rings and it’s go time, he plans on bulldozing his man.
“I’m gonna dismantle David Morrell,” said Benavidez to Premier Boxing Champions during an episode of Gloves Off.
Beating Morrell, let alone dismantling him, has been impossible for any of his previous opponents. In only 11 pro fights, the 27-year-old is already a two-division champion and has his eyes set on becoming the new face of the light heavyweight division.
Benavidez, unsurprisingly, shares Morrell’s end goal. Of course, that isn’t the only thing they share. With their first names being identical, Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) understands why fans get them confused. That said, after February 1st, The Ring’s No. 2 ranked 175-pounder and current WBC titlist, plans on pushing his first-name counterpart off the light heavyweight mountain.
“There will only be one David that wins and his name is gonna be David Benavidez.”
