A showdown against Canelo Alvarez seemed inevitable. Now, it's more like a pipe dream.
David Benavidez was creative in his approaches. Initially, he gave Alvarez his flowers and refused to say a single bad word about the current Ring, WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion. Those polite words, however, meant little to nothing as Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) ignored him anyways.
From there, it was all about aggression. Benavidez called Alvarez out every chance he could while ripping him in the process. Still, nothing has worked. Although he could continue to press his fellow Mexican in the hopes that he'll talk his way into the fight, Benavidez is perfectly fine with leaving that situation alone.
"If I don't get that Canelo fight, I really don't care," Benavidez told Sean Zittel recently. "I'm really happy where I'm at in my career. I'm happy with the opportunities I'm getting."
Speaking of opportunities, Alvarez is seemingly on the verge of giving one to a much smaller man. Terence Crawford has audaciously called Alvarez out, despite competing two weight classes lower. If The Ring's No. 1 ranked junior middleweight gets what he's asking for, Benavidez believes he'll regret it.
Just a few short months ago, Benavidez watched closely as Crawford had his hands full against Israil Madrimov. According to Benavidez, if Crawford had his fair share of issues against someone in his own division, there's no telling what Alvarez will do to him.
"Crawford is one of the best technical fighters I've ever seen but when he went to 154, I'm not saying he had problems but he kinda looked like he didn't have the power that he had at 147. And he still has to come up two or three weight classes. I think the weight classes have to be respected. He has a lot of disadvantages against him so I feel like Canelo would win."
