When Jesse Rodriguez officially moved up to bantamweight, it had huge ramifications for several boxers at 115 pounds.
One of them was David Jimenez, who held the WBA interim title, but was subsequently elevated to full champion.
Jimenez, who is rated No. 2 by The Ring at 115 pounds, has had to be patient and wait for his big opportunity and is now the first male from Costa Rica to become world champion.
"Becoming the full world champion is a dream come true and the result of many years of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication," Jimenez (18-1, 12 KOs) told The Ring. "I want to thank my team, my family, my fans, and everyone in Costa Rica who has supported me throughout this journey.
"This achievement motivates me even more because I know there are still many goals ahead. Right now, my focus is on continuing to grow as a fighter and taking on the biggest challenges available in the division."
The 34-year-old had twice been scheduled to face Ayumu Sano in Kyrgyzstan only for the April 19 date to be postponed until May 23, only for it to fall apart once again, a week before the event.
Jimenez has options. He could revisit the Sano fight, while the WBA have mandated he face John Ramirez in a rematch of the fight he won in April 2024.
"My team is currently evaluating different opportunities, and we want to make sure we choose the best option for my career," he said. "Hopefully, I will be back in the ring later this year, but we are taking our time to make the right decision.
"For now, I'm enjoying this moment, but I'm ready to get back to work and represent Costa Rica at the highest level."
