Keyshawn Davis’ deserved lightweight title shot has been scheduled for February 14.
The Ring has confirmed that the undefeated 135-pound contender will battle WBO champion Denys Berinchyk in a 12-round main event ESPN will air February 14 from The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York. Davis (12-0, 8 KOs, 1 NC), a 2021 Olympic silver medalist from Norfolk, Virginia, is the WBO’s number one contender for Berinchyk’s belt.
ESPN.com’s Mike Coppinger first reported the news of Berinchyk and Davis agreeing to contractual terms.
Davis, 25, secured his first title shot by obliterating Argentinean contender Gustavo Lemos on November 8 at Scope Arena in Norfolk. An announced crowd of 10,568 packed that venue in downtown Norfolk, where late legend Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker fought 10 times during his International Boxing Hall of Fame career.
An assertive Davis produced the most impressive performance of his three-year professional career while he simultaneously established himself as one of the sport’s rare box-office attractions among Americans.
Davis dominated Lemos despite the fact that Lemos came in a wildly unprofessional 6½ pounds overweight November 7. Lemos (29-2, 19 KOs) paid six figures from his purse to Davis and the Virginia Boxing, Martial Arts & Professional Wrestling Commission, and then dearly during their brief bout.
An unfazed Davis destroyed Lemos, who was knocked down three times until referee Raul Caiz Jr. stopped their scheduled 12-round bout at 1:08 of the second round.
Lemos’ only previous loss was a debatable 12-round, unanimous-decision defeat to New York’s Richardson Hitchins on April 6 at Fontainebleau Las Vegas. Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) won the IBF junior welterweight title from Australia’s Liam Paro (25-1, 15 KOs) in his subsequent bout December 7 at Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Berinchyk (19-0, 9 KOs) captured a then-unclaimed WBO lightweight crown in his most recent bout. The 36-year-old Ukrainian upset three-division champ Emanuel Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KOs) by unanimous decision in a 12-round match May 18 at Pechanga Arena in San Diego.
