For better or worse, Deontay Wilder is not done yet.
The Ring has learned that plans are being explored for the former long-reigning WBC heavyweight titlist to headline a BLK Prime pay-per-view event in April. Neither the opponent nor exact venue were identified, though the fight will take place in Atlanta, Georgia.
Greater specifics on Wilder's return were not made available as this goes to publication. However, it was since learned that a press conference is planned for Jan. 11 in Los Angeles to formally announce the event and reveal additional details.
The development comes as several media outlets falsely reported that Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) retired from the sport. Such rumors were born from a parody account on X mimicking The Ring social media director Michael Benson.
Quite the opposite is true, as Alabama’s Wilder never planned to end his career with back-to-back defeats and four losses in his final five fights. A team decision was made shortly after his fifth-round knockout to The Ring’s No. 4 heavyweight Zhilei Zhang (27-2-1, 22 KOs) on June 1 that Wilder “can’t go out like that.”
Unclear at the moment is whether Wilder still owes one more fight to the Riyadh Season group, and if it would affect any such plans for a springtime return in the U.S.
Wilder has fought twice on that circuit—the knockout defeat to Zhang and a Dec. 2023 twelve-round points loss to Joseph Parker (35-3, 23 KOs), The Ring’s No. 3 heavyweight. Both fights took place at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.
The setback versus Parker came 14 months after the last win to date for Wilder—an Oct. 2022 first-round knockout of Robert Helenius (32-5-, 21 KOs) in Brooklyn, New York. Wilder previously suffered back-to-back knockouts to then-unbeaten Tyson Fury, including their Feb. 2020 RING championship rematch which ended his five-year stay as WBC heavyweight titlist.
