Dillian Whyte is back in the heavyweight mix.
On December 15th, the Londoner forced Ghana’s Ebeneezer Tetteh to retire after seven rounds. The victory was Whyte’s second appearance of the year as he continues his comeback after a 16 month lay-off.
The 36 year-old will be looking to position himself for a big fight in 2025 and was an interested spectator on Saturday night as Oleksandr Usyk outpointed Tyson Fury to retain his unified heavyweight title.
IBF champion, Daniel Dubois, 22-2 (21 KOs), interrupted Usyk’s post fight interview to demand a rematch with the great Ukrainian. Last August, Usyk stopped Dubois in the ninth round of their title fight but, to this day, Dubois feels that a low blow which dropped Usyk was actually a legal blow and that the time Usyk was given to recover robbed him of the chance to score a famous victory.
Whyte, 31-3 (21 KOs), wasn’t impressed with Dubois’ antics and believes that he could be overlooking a dangerous looking title defence against Joseph Parker, 35-3 (23 KOs), which takes place in Saudi Arabia in February.
“The boy is moving mad. He’s moving mad because he's got Joseph Parker to think about,” Whyte told iFL tv.
“He's lost it. He’s moving mad because Joseph Parker is not an easy fight you know. I mean it's kind of mad because you’ve got a big, dangerous fight coming up and then you're going to call Usyk [out]. It doesn't make sense.
“Listen, right now the boy is confident and he's just moving mad. He doesn't care. He’s just moving mad. His suit looked alright though, for once. He had a decent suit and normally the suit is trash but the suit looked all right this time.”
It is over six years since Whyte beat Parker in an up and down war at the O2 Arena in London. He dropped the former WBO champion twice and was put over and hurt badly himself in the twelfth round but hung on to claim a unanimous decision victory.
If that experience didn’t provide him with enough first hand knowledge of just how hard a night’s work Dubois could be in for in February, Whyte has been paying close attention to Parker’s current run of form and feels that the current incarnation of the New Zealander is better than the version he beat back in 2018.
“He [Dubois] is a good fighter but he's not the most clever guy and that's why these guys lose because they overlook their opponent look to towards bigger fights,” Whyte said.
“You’ve got to be careful. Joseph Parker is no slouch and he's got better in the last few years and he's improved. Obviously, maybe Dubois’ thinking it's an easy fight after beating Anthony Joshua. Joshua beat Parker. He’ll be thinking, ‘Yeah, I'll beat Parker too’ but Joseph Parker is no slouch and he’s improved a lot lately so Dubois needs to be careful.
“Focus on what's in front of you. The Usyk fight’s there, it's not going anywhere. Focus on Joseph Parker because he might end up beating him up. You have to be careful.”
