LONDON — The Ring's new 135-pound champion Caroline Dubois is willing to sidestep further unifications in order to make “the biggest fight in women’s boxing” against Alycia Baumgardner.
WBC lightweight champion Dubois added Terri Harper’s WBO belt to her collection with a dominant points victory at London’s Olympia on Easter Sunday.
But she will put her pursuit of the two remaining major straps on hold in order to finally reach a deal with the current unified super-featherweight champion Baumgardner.
Dubois said: “That’s the fight I want: Alycia, the bum, Baumgardner.
“That’s the fight I want by the end of the year, there’s no need to waste time, there’s no need to mess around. Let’s make it happen, the best vs the best, there’s only five pounds difference. She’s older and more experienced than me so let’s see. That’s the fight I want.
“I would take it over a unification fight. I believe she’s going to run away from this fight but by the end of this year we need to make the biggest fight in women’s boxing.
“I need that fight. I think I knock her out. She doesn’t want that fight, she’s running. She was on her knees this morning praying that I lost. There’s no way it was going to happen but she was on her knees.”
First, 31-year-old Baumgardner is scheduled to face Bo Mi Re Shin at Madison Square Garden Theater on April 17.
Dubois added: “She didn’t even want that fight, she wanted the fight against Tiara Brown, a featherweight. That tells you everything you need to know.
“She didn’t want the Bo fight or the Caroline Dubois fight. She wants easy pickings and is trying her hardest to get the easiest pickings possible. That’s fine but then don’t walk around like you’re gangster, like you’re that girl.
“She’s fighting in two weeks so it will be interesting and we are going to see. I’m interested to see how she gets through that fight, and I think it’s a tough fight.”
Southpaw Dubois dropped Harper in the sixth round and barely put a foot wrong en route to a wide unanimous decision victory. On her performance, the 25-year-old added: “I was really happy with the fight.
“She was smart, tricky in there and negative. She’s changed the way she fights, she used to be a lot more aggressive. That made me level up. I felt really present in there so I’m happy.
“She was smarter than I thought. She was trying to counter me. I could tell they were trying to get me when I switched off so it was up to me to focus, use my head movement and be clever.”
