After an impressive demolition job against Sunny Edwards, Galal Yafai appears headed to the fast track of the flyweight division.
Yafai (9-0, 7 KOs) scored a sixth-round stoppage win against Edwards (21-2, 4 KOs) and forced his fellow British countryman to retire after the fight.
The 2020 Olympics gold medalist Yafai has just two years of professional experience under his belt but is already 31 years old. Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing doesn’t want to waste much more time moving along his flyweight phenom.
Yafai won the WBC interim flyweight title when beating Edwards, helping him secure a shot against Japan juggernaut and the full WBC champion Kenshiro Teraji (24-1, 15 KOs).
“You saw the difference between someone at the backend of their career and someone at the start of their career,” said Hearn. “It was an unbelievable, ice-cold performance. I don't even think he was breathing when the fight was stopped. It was a difference of the new guard coming through. A very special fighter. Yafai proved he was a serious fighter in the professional ranks.
“Yes, for sure [Teraji is the next logical plan]. We want to bring the big championship fights to the UK. He's going to be around for a long time. One day he and Jesse Rodriguez are going to be in one of the biggest fights in the sport. Now, it's about capturing world championships at flyweight. Hopefully, that's next.”
Other champions in the 112-pound weight class include Anthony Olascuaga (WBO), Seigo Yuri Akui (WBA) and Angel Ayala (IBF). The Ring Magazine title is currently vacant.
“[Yafai will go] all the way,” said Edwards. “He’s an Olympic gold medallist, and in his ninth fight, he just beat the number one in the division. I remember what that was like, three or four years ago. I’m sure he’s gonna get a lot of confidence, and a lot of motivation from this. Hopefully, he goes on and dethrones Teraji and looks good doing it.”
