As first reported by The Ring, Lomachenko, a three-division champion, is officially coming out of retirement and targeting a fall return. The two-time Olympic gold medalist, according to the report, isn’t interested in tune-ups and has his eyes on Navarrete and his IBF and WBO junior lightweight straps.

Shortly after, the WBO informed The Ring that if Lomachenko wants Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs) next, it would have no problem sanctioning their bout. With a showdown against the future Hall of Famer becoming a strong possibility, Navarrete is embracing the monumental challenge.

“Lomachenko suddenly comes out of retirement and suddenly says that he's going for everything,” Navarrete told ESPN Knockout. “Suddenly, the WBO puts it on the table that they're willing to open the door to a possible fight. I think Lomachenko’s career is something very special and very exceptional. I’m ready to take on challenges. ”

It’s been a while since Lomachenko laced up his gloves. The Ukrainian hasn’t fought since stopping George Kambosos in May 2024 for the vacant IBF lightweight title. He retired over a year later.

The 38-year-old claimed he lost motivation following his controversial loss to Devin Haney in the summer of 2023.

While Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) was enjoying the retirement life, Navarrete has been busy putting in the work. The Mexican native is coming off the best win of his career, a one-sided drubbing over Eduardo Nunez to begin his reign as a unified champion.

At the moment, Navarrete is obligated to fight Charly Suarez, his WBO mandatory. If the 31-year-old can find a way past Suarez and eventually come to an agreement to fight Lomachenko, he'll be very happy indeed.

“I’m super happy if it happens,” Navarrete said. “Obviously I’m going to do a special camp. He’s a southpaw and he’s great. He’s a great fighter.”
