Former champion Errol Spence Jr. said a matchup between young 154-pound stars Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz Jr. would be a 50-50 fight.
Jaron Ennis, Jermell Charlo, and Errol Spence were all seated ringside Saturday as highly-interested observers watching Vergil Ortiz dismantle Erickson Lubin at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Although he’s never held a championship title, Ortiz’s second-round stoppage victory further stamped his status as The Ring’s No. 1 junior middleweight contender.
Following Ortiz’s win, despite all of the focus being on the much-talked-about fight with Ennis, who confronted Ortiz in the ring after the win, conversation immediately kicked into a new gear for Ortiz to square off against Spence, potentially.
“I think Ortiz [versus] Spence at Cowboy Stadium for the biggest all-Texas matchup in history, and [Jermell] Charlo vs Boots as the co-main event, and the winners fighting each other just might be [fire]. Makes sense, Charlo and Boots both turned Ortiz down,” Ortiz manager Rick Mirigian wrote on social media.
The former unified welterweight champion Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) has not fought since suffering the lone loss of his career against Terence Crawford in July 2023. Spence, 35, was supposed to return last year and make his 154-pound debut in a fight against Sebastian Fundora, but the fight never came to be.
Spence didn’t reveal many details about what his future holds during a post-fight scrum Saturday, but he did react to Ortiz’s performance against Lubin.
“I don't know what was going on with Lubin, but Vergil did his thing,” Spence told reporters. “Lubin felt the power and kind of shelled up a little bit. Ortiz looked exciting. He did what he was supposed to do.”
Spence also shared his thoughts on how a potential fight against Ortiz and Ennis would play out.
“It could go either way,” said Spence. “They are both exciting. For them to fight at this young of an age, it will be a great fight.”
