Juan Francisco Estrada will take on Tenshin Nasukawa in a WBC bantamweight title eliminator on April 10 in Tokyo, the sanctioning body announced Tuesday.
“This will be my 50th fight and I feel very motivated to travel to Japan and win the opportunity to compete for the WBC bantamweight crown," Estrada said during a WBC event held in Mexico on Tuesday. "I feel I still have a lot to give and I am going to leave everything in the ring, as I do in all my fights."
The winner of Estrada-Nasukawa will be in prime position to face the WBC's 118-pound beltholder, Takuma Inoue.
“El Gallo” Estrada (45-4, 28 KOs), a former 112- and 115-pound champion and once a mainstay in The Ring's top 10 pound-for-pound rankings, is looking to become a three-division titleholder.
Estrada made his 118-pound debut in June with a 10-round unanimous decision win against Karim Arce Lugo in Mexico. It was Estrada's first fight since getting stopped by Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez inside seven rounds of a close fight in June 2024.
Estrada is most known for narrow wins against Roman Gonzalez in 2021 and '22, as well as a loss to "Chocolatito" in 2012. Estrada, from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, also has victories versus Carlos Cuadras in 2020 and against Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in 2019. Estrada also has a 2018 majority-decision loss to Sor Rungvisai.
Estrada, who turns 36 on April 14, has fought just six times since 2020.
“I simply wish you the best," said WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman. "I will be in Japan for this bout. You have everything it takes to succeed. It will be a fight of maturity versus youth, and I am totally sure that you will hold Mexico high.”
Nasukawa (7-1, 2 KOs) could set himself up for a rematch against Inoue if he outlasts Estrada. Nasukawa, 27, a former MMA fighter and kickboxer who turned to boxing in 2023, lost for the first time in November against Inoue via unanimous decision for the vacant WBC title.
Nasukawa is also known for facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a 2018 exhibition in which he was dropped three times in the first round before his corner mercifully ended the matchup.
