For over 30 years, former WBC and Ring flyweight champion Charlie Magri has been a fixture at the President’s Sporting Club charity events.
Now, the sports foundation is giving back to the former champion.
The President’s Sporting Club is hosting a Charlie Magri Benefit Night on April 24 to help Magri in his battle with Alzheimer's disease. The event was put together by President Sporting Club chairman and founder Mike Jackson and former heavyweight world champion Frank Bruno, who is the club’s president.
“Charlie has done a lot for us,” Jackson told The Ring. “When I heard Charlie's got Alzheimer's, I just thought it would be good if we could do something to recognize Charlie’s support over all those years and do a benefit evening on his behalf. Obviously, my first call was to Frank Bruno, and he said he would support it and come along and do a question-and-answer session as part of the entertainment for the evening. From there, we put the evening together and it's gone very well. We're looking forward to a good evening.”
The cost to attend is £50 per person and the money raised will help Magri and his partner, Tina Magri, with ongoing expenses.
The event will be held at Manor of Groves Hotel in High Wych, Hertfordshire, England. Bruno, and fellow former world champions Colin McMillan, Duke McKenzie, John Conteh and John H Stracey, along with former European and British titleholders Clinton McKenzie, Derek Williams, Jason Matthews, Billy Schwer and British judge and referee Bob Williams, are expected to be in attendance. A tribute presentation, Q&A with Bruno, three-course meal, comedy show and music entertainment are all planned for the benefit night, which begins at 7 p.m. BST.
“It's lovely,” Tina told The Ring. “It's really lovely for him. Charlie's done a lot of charity work himself, going back in the day, and he just feels as though that he's remembered, and it’s come back to him, which is really lovely. He’s really happy with that.”
In 2023, Charlie went to the doctor for a memory test. The following year, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, which is defined by the Alzheimer’s Association as a form of dementia that “affects memory, thinking and behavior.”
Tina retired from her job as a care worker last year to take care of Charlie. Charlie and Tina will have been together for 20 years in May.
“It’s been a bit difficult for him,” Tina said. “Short-term memory is not very good, but long term, his boxing and stuff, he remembers the majority of that. It’s an everyday sort of thing. The forgetfulness is there, and there are bad days and good days.”
Charlie won The Ring title and WBC belt in 1983 with a seventh-round stoppage of Eleoncio Mercedes. He also held the British and European flyweight titles.
In just his third pro fight, Charlie won the British flyweight title with a seventh-round stoppage of Dave Smith in 1977. As an amateur, he won four ABA national titles and a bronze medal at the 1975 European Championships in Poland.
