WBO heavyweight champion Fabio Wardley admits the prospect of fighting Deontay Wilder still intrigues him after watching the American outpoint Derek Chisora at London's O2 Arena on Saturday night.
Wardley (20-0-1, 19 KOs) is preparing to make a dangerous first title defense against British rival Daniel Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs) at Manchester's Co-op Live Arena on May 9 but took time out to watch the Chisora-Wilder brawl ringside, providing analysis and adding to the post-fight discussion on the DAZN broadcast.
The passing years have taken their toll on 40-year-old Wilder (45-4-1, 43 KOs) but whilst he may not be the same violent force who racked up 10 WBC heavyweight title defenses, still possesses the type of character and reputation to engage fans who will never forget his spectacular highlight reel.
Nor do they gloss over his vicious trilogy of fights with two-time heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
Wardley told The Ring that he would still be interested in a future fight against the most devastating puncher of his generation, if it made sense.
"I would. Look, my number one priority is Dubois. Beyond that it's Oleksandr Usyk and then if that is impossible to make happen, I think yeah target number three would be on Deontay Wilder."
As Wilder left the ring on Saturday night, he crossed paths with two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs).
The two have spent the best part of a decade circling each other and although the fight may not carry the same weight as it once would have, the two still possess a combustible mix of explosiveness and vulnerability.
If Wilder's path takes him in a different direction, Wardley would happily take his seat and watch two of the era's most exciting heavyweights finally collide.
"I really like that fight as well. I think it's not crossroads fight, it’s just a good fight for the pair of them where they find themselves at this point of their careers," he said.
"I know it's kind of a bit late in terms of how and where we wanted them from their primes and stuff but better late than never, I guess."
