After an exciting main event in Egypt lived up to the billing last week, there's a sneakily busy weekend of bouts taking place in the final weekend of May.
Action gets underway Friday evening in the London heat at York Hall when former WBC flyweight beltholder Charlie Edwards seeks to become the new IBF mandatory challenger for Willibaldo Garcia Perez's title when facing South Africa's Sikho Nqothole (21-3, 13 KOs) in an elimination matchup, live and exclusively on DAZN.
Perez ends a year-long layoff against Australia's Andrew Moloney (28-4, 18 KOs) next weekend, so an impressive performance from the Surrey man will reinforce his belief he could beat either man later this year to become a two-weight world champion.
Meanwhile in Central Asia, former unified junior featherweight champion Murodjon Akhmadaliev seeks an early night's work on his return after defeat by Naoya Inoue last September when facing Venezuela's Hegly Mosqueda.
Unsurprisingly, The Ring's Mike Coppinger is backing both former beltholders to earn decision victories as they seek a return to prominence.
The Ring's No. 9-rated junior welterweight contender Adam Azim also returns, to headline a London show against determined veteran in former title challenger Steve Claggett. After injury curtailed his January 31 bout with Gustavo Lemos, the 24-year-old looks for a standout showing against a former Teofimo Lopez opponent.
That's the only bout from five selections Copp believes will not go the distance, predicting Azim to stop the well-traveled Canadian in round 10 of a scheduled 12. He also thinks no world titles will change hands this weekend.
Ring and unified light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol ends a 15-month absence after back surgery to defend his array of titles against IBF mandatory challenger Michael Eifert in Russia, elsewhere on Saturday.
That's one of two DAZN offerings at championship level, as hours later O'Shaquie Foster looks to defend his WBC junior lightweight crown against former WBA featherweight beltholder Raymond Ford in Houston.
Coppinger went 4-1 last weekend, here's a reminder of how those picks looked:
- Hiruta decision — Mizuki Hiruta beat Mai Soliman (UD10) to retain Ring, WBO junior bantamweight titles
- Torrez TKO/KO10 — Frank Sanchez scored a second-round upset knockout win over Richard Torrez
- Catterall decision — Jack Catterall floored, then outpointed Shakhram Giyasov for a career-best scalp
- Sheeraz TKO/KO4 — Hamzah Sheeraz needed just two rounds to dismantle Alem Begic, winning WBO honors
- Usyk TKO/KO5 — Oleksandr Usyk avoided disaster with an 11th-round stoppage of Rico Verhoeven
