Fernando Vargas Jr. couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity.
The junior middleweight from Southern California is scheduled to throw down against Callum Walsh in the co-main event on the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford show Sept. 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Netflix.
Vargas knows he’ll have more eyes on him than ever before. He also knows that his opponent has a good reputation.
Walsh (14-0, 11 KOs) is by far the best fighter Vargas has ever faced. The 24-year-old Irishman is ranked by three of the major sanctioning bodies, as high as No. 4 by the IBF. Vargas is ranked by none.
And with two knockout victories this year, the resident of Cork is on a roll.
Is Walsh dangerous? Without question. Is he hungry? Undoubtedly. But is Vargas worried about him? Not in the slightest.
“I believe in my ability,” Vargas told FightHype.com. “We’re gonna knock Callum Walsh out. This is gonna be my coming-out party.”
Scoring knockouts is what Vargas (17-0, 15 KOs) does best. He has stopped his last five opponents, all inside five rounds. Still, he hasn't been able to break into the top echelon of a talented, deep division.
He believes he’ll move one step closer to the kind of recognition he seeks if he’s able to take care of business on Sept. 13.
“This is my time,” Vargas said. “This fight is gonna take me to a whole other level. I’m the B side [but] I cannot fight like ... it. I’m gonna show the best me. I have to. I’m gonna make doubters into believers. I’m excited.”
