Brandon Figueroa knows that big unification fights lie ahead.
Any hopes of those fights coming to fruition first depend on him retaining his WBA featherweight title against Tomoki Kameda on Saturday. If Figueroa handles business, WBO featherweight titleholder Rafael Espinoza is who the Texan wants next.
“[Espinoza] is the No. 1 in our division,” Figueroa told The Ring. “I feel like that's a fight of the year candidate. I'm here looking for the most insane fights, the fights that are gonna be marked in the history books, just like all these great traditional champions before us that we still watch from 10 or 20 years ago. I wanna keep putting my name up there in the legacy, and just keep making incredible fights. I want people, the fans, to go out there and go on YouTube or replay the fights and be in love with them.”
Figueroa (27-2-1, 20 KOs) faces Kameda (42-5, 23 KOs) in the co-main event of Sebastian Fundora's WBC 154-pound title defense vs. Ermal Hadribeaj at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. The Premier Boxing Champions card will stream on DAZN and TNT.
Figueroa, 29, became the WBA featherweight champion thanks to a 12th-round stoppage of Nick Ball on February 7 in Liverpool.
The featherweight division boasts talented champions alongside Figueroa and Espinoza, with Angelo Leo holding the IBF belt and Bruce Carrington having the WBC strap. Figueroa believes the unification bouts will come to fruition after they all notch title defenses, which would make potential bouts between the champions that much bigger.
Espinoza (28-0, 24 KOs), The Ring’s No. 1 featherweight contender, last defended his title with an 11th-round stoppage of Arnold Khegai on November 15. Carrington (18-0, 10 KOs), The Ring’s No. 2 featherweight, defended his title for the first time with a unanimous decision against Rene Palacios on July 4.
Leo, The Ring’s No. 3 featherweight, last fought in May 2025 when he scored a majority decision over Kameda in Japan. Leo (26-1, 12 KOs) was scheduled to return in May against Ra’eese Aleem, but the latter missed weight by over two pounds, which led to the fight being canceled.
“Boxing is a business sport,” Figueroa said. “I feel like they want to settle and capitalize on the champions right now at 126. Each of us defends our belts, each of us keeps the belts, and then once we build momentum, once we build a little bit of a story, then I feel like they want to match us up.
"As of right now, I gotta defend my belt maybe once or twice. I think that they want to cement us as the champions at 126, and we're not gonna go anywhere, and then they're gonna probably pit us up against each other. I’m here to fight whoever.”
Kameda, of Osaka, Japan, has also been out of the ring since his narrow defeat to Leo. The 35-year-old held the WBO bantamweight title from 2013-15 before losing it on points to Jamie McDonnell.
Figueroa, a former WBA/WBC 122-pound champ, made his pro debut on the same card and won a unanimous decision in a four-round bout against Hector Gutierrez.
“I think they're gonna try to box me,” Figueroa said of Kameda. “He's more of the boxing side. He's faster, and if you're gonna fight someone like me, you don't wanna be in the pocket with me. I am a great inside fighter.
"We're prepared to chase him all 12 rounds if it needs to be. I'm just ready. Me and my team are preparing ourselves for whatever is gonna come.”
