Johnny Fisher wants to showcase the results of a year spent training under Tony Sims when he fights Belgium’s Michael Pirotton on September 26.
Just over 12 months have passed since Fisher left his longtime trainer, Mark Tibbs, and joined up with Sims.
Sky Sports will broadcast Fisher’s 10-round heavyweight clash with Pirotton, his second fight since switching trainers, from Copper Box Arena in London. Paramount+ will also stream the card headlined by Fisher-Pirotton in the United States.
The new partnership got off to a rocky start.
Fisher was badly hurt in the opening round of his fight with Ivan Balaz on December 6 in Monte Carlo. For a few desperate minutes, his career hung in the balance.
To his credit, the 27-year-old Fisher pulled himself together and stopped the previously undefeated Slovak in the fourth round.
Those helter-skelter rounds will have taught Sims more about Fisher’s strengths and weaknesses than any number of pad or sparring sessions. The two have spent the past nine months working out how to add a little more guile to Fisher’s style without sacrificing the qualities that make him effective.
“I feel I’ve been working a lot of different stuff with Tony in the gym,” Fisher (14-1, 12 KOs) said as he came face to face with Pirotton (12-2, 6 KOs) for the first time in a Sky Sports segment. “I’m rolling a bit more, just getting my boxing brain working a little bit more, but I’m not going to lose what I am, which is super aggressive, explosive, come forward, because that’s my power. My strength is my power, so I’m going to make sure I use that on September the 26th.”
Fisher hasn’t boxed at Copper Box since he was stopped in the fifth round of his rematch with Dave Allen in May 2025. His large, loyal fanbase is expected to make the short journey from Essex to support him against the largely unknown Pirotton.
The fight will also be Fisher’s first under the Zuffa Boxing banner. The emerging promotional company fronted by UFC president and CEO Dana White hopes he can repay its investment in him and provide it with a series of high-profile nights as Zuffa looks to establish itself in the British boxing market.
Fisher is fully aware of the plans that are being put in place for him, but he refuses to look beyond the fight with Pirotton.
“Listen, your next fight is always the most important fight,” Fisher said. “I’ve got a man in front of me with ambition, who has got a good record and fought only a few days ago. So, I’ve got to be super fit, super focused, and one thing is for sure – in Tony Sims’s gym, I’ll definitely be both of them things.”
