If things don’t happen exactly the way O’Shaquie Foster envisions, he’ll leave the junior lightweight division behind.
Foster hopes to meet Mexico’s Emanuel Navarrete next in a three-belt, 130-pound title unification fight. Foster, rated No. 2 by The Ring, desperately wants to add the No. 1-ranked Navarrete’s scalp, along with the IBF and WBO titles, to his WBC crown.
The junior lightweight division has several names Foster can face if talks fall through, but the 32-year-old champion from Orange, Texas, won’t bother. Instead, he’ll kiss 130 goodbye and say hello to the lightweight division.
“That’s most likely the move if we can’t get Navarrete,” Foster said during the newest episode of the “Mr. Verzace Podcast,” hosted by Ring CEO Rick Reeno. “I’m looking real close at Lamont [Roach] and [William] Zepeda. I’m paying real close attention. I think the 135 division is hot. We gonna get it boiling when we get up there, then we're gonna cool everything down. We gonna take over.”
Roach and Zepeda will fight August 1 at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas for the vacant WBC lightweight title. Foster defeated Stephen Fulton by unanimous decision to win the WBC interim lightweight title December 6, but they only fought for that 135-pound crown because Fulton came in two pounds overweight for what was scheduled as a 12-round fight for Foster’s 130-pound title.
Foster gave up that interim championship to keep competing in the 130-pound division.
The thought of winning more than an interim title in a second division is enticing, but facing Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs, 1 NC) remains his top priority. Navarrete added the IBF belt to his WBO title when he stopped Eduardo Nunez in the 11th round February 28 in Glendale, Arizona.
Foster (25-3, 12 KOs) believes that their paths will cross at some point. He also thinks that, eventually, he’ll not only get his hands on a belt at 135, but he’ll max out and do the same two divisions higher than that.
“The way 147 looks, I’ll say 147,” Foster said when asked in which division he’ll end his career. “When I see the competition there, I definitely can go up there.”
