Frank Warren is already charting a course for Tyson Fury to return to the top of the heavyweight division.
Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) retired after losing a second successive decision to Ring and unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024 but will end a 16-month lay-off when he boxes Arslanbek Makhmudov (21-2, 19 KOs) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadiumon April 11. Netflix will broadcast the event from London.
Warren has been here before. He guided Fury, 37, back to the pinnacle of the sport after “The Gypsy King” spent two-plus years on the sidelines after ending Wladimir Klitschko’s title reign in 2015.
Warren knows that should Fury get past Makhmudov, the former heavyweight champion will only want to be involved in the biggest possible events.
“The mission is to be a winner. It always is to be a winner, to be the number one, and that's what he wants,” Warren told Queensberry.
“There was a plan for the Anthony Joshua fight, but I think that been pushed back and we'll see what happens in due course. It was obviously pushed back for obvious reasons but you know if Tyson wants to fight on he’ll want to be fighting the best and, who knows, maybe there'll be another Usyk fight.”
On Monday, Fury officially announced his fight with Makhmudov and declared that the primary reason for his return is to “make boxing great again” and inject some stardust back into the division.
Every weight class would benefit from the return of a fighter of Fury’s stature, but the heavyweight division has continued to evolve during his absence. Whilst a third fight with Usyk would tick every box professionally and personally, it isn’t his only high-profile option.
WBO heavyweight champion Fabio Wardley has developed into one of the most popular, crowd-pleasing fighters in the UK. Former IBF titleholder Daniel Dubois has proven that whilst he may not yet be a stadium attraction in his own right, he is more than capable of filling giant venues when matched with the right dance partner.
On May 9, the two Brits will collide in what promises to be an explosive affair at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena, live on DAZN. As long as things go to plan against Makhmudov, Warren believes that Fury will be at the fight on a scouting mission.
“There’s a lot happening. Also, we’ve got that big fight coming up in May between Fabio and Daniel Dubois. That's a cracker of a fight,” he said.
“The number one heavyweight fighting the two-time world champion, the two biggest punchers out there duking it out and I'm sure he'll be a very interested ringside watcher for that fight.
“The heavyweight division ... is on fire. Tyson coming back is stoking it up. It's really going up a few degrees. So there's some interesting and really good quality fights to be made.”
