Fundora Declares Himself Best 154-Pounder: They All Need To Come To Me

LAS VEGAS – Sebastian Fundora doesn’t typically make provocative statements.
The reserved Fundora tends to let others sing his praises while he quietly goes about his business. The WBC junior middleweight champion confidently declared himself boxing’s best 154-pound fighter after his sixth-round stoppage of Keith Thurman, though, and delivered a message to anyone in his division that wants to fight.
“I think I’m the best,” Fundora said during his post-fight press conference Saturday night at MGM Grand. “I think they all need to come to me.”
Sampson Lewkowicz, Fundora’s promoter, called his dominant performance against Thurman “probably the best fight of his career.” The improved southpaw utilized his jab, managed distance well when Thurman tried to hit him and pressed his much shorter, older opponent until the damage done to the former WBA/WBC welterweight champion’s face prompted referee Thomas Taylor to stop their fight despite that Thurman remained on his feet.
“Now he’s mature,” Lewkowicz said. “And I guarantee you he will fight any of the champions or former champions.”
The 28-year-old Fundora is 4-0, including three knockouts, since Brian Mendoza upset him by seventh-round knockout in April 2023. He is ranked second behind only Vergil Ortiz Jr. (24-0, 22 KOs) in The Ring’s junior middleweight top 10.
Lewkowicz doesn’t think a fight versus Ortiz, who owns the WBC interim title, is a realistic option for Fundora’s next bout because of Ortiz’s ongoing legal issue with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions. Fundora agreed that former undisputed 154-pound champ Jermell Charlo is an appealing opponent, but the long-inactive Charlo was the only potential foe Fundora addressed directly after defeating Thurman (31-2, 23 KOs, 1 NC).
The Coachella, California native wants to unify titles, but WBA/WBO champ Xander Zayas (23-0, 13 KOs) is expected to defend his belts against former Ring/IBF/WBA welterweight champ Jaron “Boots” Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs, 1 NC) on June 27 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Josh Kelly owns the IBF junior middleweight crown. England’s Kelly (18-1-1, 9 KOs) doesn’t have a fight scheduled, but a Charlo-Fundora fight would do bigger business in the United States, where Fundora prefers to compete on cards backed by Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions.
Zayas, Ennis and Kelly are respectively ranked third, fifth and sixth by The Ring to fight for an unclaimed championship.
Fundora emphasized he wants to further prove himself against the top competitors in his division. He also made it clear that after the WBO stripped him of its belt last May that holding multiple titles isn’t as important to him as it once was.
The WBO took its championship from Fundora because he chose a rematch with former WBO champ Tim Tszyu over making a mandated defense versus Zayas. Fundora stopped Tszyu (26-3, 18 KOs) after the seventh round July 19 at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
“It’s very realistic,” Fundora said regarding arranging title unification fights. “It’s just things need to be put together right, you know? Like, I don’t know – I had the WBO [title] for a little bit, but for some reason those guys were giving me a hard time the whole time. So, I’m very comfortable with the WBC. I been saying this over and over again – I’ll fight these guys, I’ll unify with these guys, but I’ll probably drop the belt right after.
“I’ll beat these guys for a title, take their title, and vacate it right away. Or they can keep it, you know? But I’ll fight all these champions, because that’s what we want, right? We want Fundora to fight these champions or fight these fighters. But they can keep the belt after, I don’t care. I’m happy with the WBC.”
