Fury deems Gomez-O'Doherty draw a 'bad robbery'

Michael Gomez took solace in a message of support from two-time heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, after being held to a controversial majority draw in his British and Commonwealth lightweight title fight with Louie O’Doherty on Saturday night.
Fury is preparing to fight Anthony Joshua in the main event of a Netflix-streamed Ring show at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on December 11 but took time out from training to watch WBO heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois stop Fabio Wardley in the second round of their rematch.
Sporting a Manchester United football shirt, The Ring’s No. 3 heavyweight took to Instagram and wondered aloud why his fellow Manchester native hadn’t been awarded victory in the evening’s main event.
“I just watched that Gomez Jr. fight and he only lost two rounds, and he won 10, and they've given him a draw. That is a bad robbery, that. f——g hell,” Fury said.
“Pull your finger out. How in the world did you give it a draw? You robbed the lad of his title. Boxing's f—d up, man. Can't leave it to the judges.”
In February 2025, Gomez (23-2-1, 8 KOs) turned in a poor performance and was stopped in the 10th round of a tame bid for Reece Bellotti’s British and Commonwealth junior lightweight titles.
After a 13-month break from the sport, Gomez flirted with retirement but instead moved up to lightweight and began working with up-and-coming Manchester trainer Alex Rutter.
The 29-year-old from Manchester has built momentum since moving to 135 pounds and flew out of the blocks against O’Doherty.
O’Doherty (12-0-1, 3 KOs) has enjoyed a quiet but quick rise through the British ranks but he seemed almost taken aback by Gomez's fast start and found himself in a deep hole by the midway point.
The 26-year-old from Essex dug deep and won rounds over the second half of the fight, but Gomez's aggression, consistent work rate and effective inside work looked to have earned him a deserved victory.
Gomez can be a fiery, instinctive character but after initially trying to storm out of the ring, he handled the situation well and had calmed down by the time he picked up his phone and made the following Instagram post, which has been edited for clarity, on Sunday:
"Not all films get that happy ending but they are still worth seeing. Not the result I wanted or believe I should have got but that's life. Not gonna cry over it [or] blame the world. Only thing that hurts is for last 15 weeks I dreamt showing my daughter what hard work gets you in life.
"But it wasn't to be. Gonna take a break from social media for a bit and some time out of boxing. This one hurts a lot but if you told me 11 months ago I'd be back-to-back co-main events, I'd have told you [to] come off the medication."
