Galal Yafai will move a step closer to fighting for world titles as he prepares to defend his WBC 'Interim' flyweight belt against Mexican Francisco Rodriguez Jr on June 21.
Birmingham's Yafai, a Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold-medallist, hasn't been in action since stopping Sunny Edwards in six rounds last November.
The victory was a breakout performance for Yafai (9-0, 7 KOs), who now looks to take things a step further against veteran Rodriguez Jr, who is trained by Eddy Reynoso.
Rodriguez Jr (38-6-1, 26 KOs) is a former champion at strawweight, where he was the unified WBO and IBF champion, but he's since failed in efforts at junior-bantamweight against Kazuto Ioka and Junto Nakatani.
The winner will be cemented as the No. 1 contender for WBC and WBA 112-pound champion Kenshiro Teraji, The Ring's pound-for-pound No. 10 fighter.
Yafai vs. Rodriguez Jr will be the co-main event and Birmingham's BP Pulse Live Arena will play host, with the card to be streamed live on DAZN worldwide.
At the top of the bill, Shabaz Masoud (14-0, 4 KOs) and Peter McGrail (11-1, 6 KOs) will clash for the former's IBO junior-featherweight title, while Conah Walker (15-3-1, 6 KOs) will defend his British welterweight strap against Liam Taylor (28-2-1, 14 KOs) on the undercard.
Masoud was last in action six months ago, beating Liam Davies to win the IBO belt, while British 147-pound champ stopped Harry Scarff in the 11th round to capture the Lonsdale belt back in January.
McGrail beat Rhys Edwards by razor-thin decision on the Oleksandr-Tyson Fury 2 card in Riyadh last December.
Paris 2024 Olympian Pat Brown, who was successful on his debut last month, stopping Federico Grandone, will also be back in action on June 21.
Hamza Uddin, Ibraheem Sulaimaan and Aaron Bowen are all set to feature on the undercard too.
