WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia has revealed that he will be fighting Conor Benn in Las Vegas on September 12.
Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) is the No. 1 contender for Garcia’s green and gold strap and the pair have been talking up a fight with one another for months.
Now, during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, 27-year-old ‘King Ry’ claimed that the deal is done for a Sin City showdown this Mexican Independence weekend.
Garcia said: “We are fighting on September 12, it will be in Vegas. His name is Conor Benn.”
Garcia won the title via a unanimous decision victory over Mario Barrios in at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas on February 21 and this clash with Benn would represent his first defense.
The Englishman meanwhile, outpointed Regis Prograis over 10 rounds at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 11 in his first fight since shocking the boxing world by signing for Zuffa Boxing.
He weighed in at 149.5 pounds for that fight but insisted he will be able to get down to welterweight for the first time since April 2022 in order to face Garcia for the title.
Benn has made no secret of his desire to win the WBC belt in particular given that it was the same title his dad Nigel, the two-weight world champion, held between 1992 and 1996.
Garcia also revealed he has wanted to fight Benn ever since he felt disrespected by him at an awards ceremony in 2024.
Garcia added: “He’s talking a lot. He’s talking crazy. He actually confronted me at an awards show two years ago. My wife was there, he touched up on me and grabbed me so it’s a little personal.
“We’ll be ready to go get him. Trust me, we will show him how it’s done.”
