Ryan Garcia is ready to defend his WBC welterweight title against Conor Benn on September 12 in Las Vegas.
But is he ready for a rematch anytime soon against arch-nemesis Devin Haney?
"I'm not in a rush to make that fight happen. They have to sit with that loss," Garcia told reporters. "Why do I have to beg for it? I'm here. I'm about to beat up Conor Benn. I want Teofimo Lopez, Rolando Romero and Shakur Stevenson. I have a lot of options. I'm not really worried about Haney now. If it happens, it happens.
"All these guys obviously have to come to me, you know what I mean? I'm definitely the lottery fight. If you want to be a huge name, I'm the guy to do it [against]. You have to get through me."
Haney, the WBO champion at 147 pounds, and Garcia have been at each other's throats ever since squaring off in April 2024. Garcia dropped Haney three times and originally scored a majority decision win that was later ruled a No Contest when it was revealed that Garcia tested positive for a banned substance.
Garcia was subsequently fined and suspended before returning in May of last year to a unanimous decision defeat against Romero. Garcia bounced back, however, last time out in February by beating Mario Barrios for the crown he currently carries.
"I actually think that Barrios, stylistically, was a harder fight [than Benn will be]," Garcia said. "He was very tall, snappy, fast, and strong. He had a strong, big ass head. It was hard to knock that dude out. If I had a different mentality, I would have knocked him out. I was trying to be disciplined. It was pure boxing. I wasn't trying to do too much, and then I hurt my hand in the sixth round."
Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) emphasized he's no longer dealing with hand issues and plans on effectively using his mitts to make quick work of Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) when they meet next month at T-Mobile Arena to headline a Zuffa Boxing show that will stream on Paramount+ in the United States and DAZN in the UK and Ireland.
"I feel like if I don't knock him out within five rounds, I'll be a little disappointed in myself," Garcia said. "But I am still going to beat the f—k out of him and hopefully knock him out later. I am training to knock him out under five. This fight is five and below … I'm here to become a legend."
