Gary Hyde believes that his undefeated son, Tommy, has found the ideal man to guide him through the super middleweight division.
Hyde famously spent time managing Guillermo Rigondeaux and a number of other Cuban boxers and it is more than a decade since he became aware of the work respected trainer, Lee Beard, was doing with fighters like Alexei Acosta, Mike Perez and Luis Garcia.
Tommy, 10–0 (7 KOs), had been training in California until he decided it was time to move his training base closer to his home of Cork, Ireland last year.
Manchester based Beard’s name immediately came to mind.
Hyde is delighted with his son’s progress since he linked up with Beard.
“Yeah, I see massive changes in him since Lee started training him,” he told The Ring.
“I know he’s after adding to his arsenal. He’s very, very good and I’m just very happy with his improvement.
“The control of the opponent [is the biggest improvement he has noticed]. He always had a great work ethic so that hasn't changed. We have a different trainer that leads us but I just find the way that he's controlling opponents and there’s more power as well.”
Hyde has used his contacts to keep his son busy.
As well as fighting in Ireland three times since turning professional back in December 2022, the 25 year-old has also boxed in America seven times.
He and Beard have already spent enough time travelling to get to know each other well.
Last October they made the Transatlantic trip to Massachusetts for their first fight together and Hyde got the partnership off to a winning start by stopping Germany’s Aro Schwartz with a picture perfect right hand.
They then made their way back to Ireland only for his fight to be pulled at the last minute and are now preparing to head down to Australia for an April 11th fight in Melbourne. An opponent has yet to be named.
“Yeah, we can do it. We can go where we want so we're just enjoying the trips and enjoying the experience,” Hyde said.
“From the beginning of next year,” he added when asked when the team will put down roots and begin working along a determined path.
Tommy - who stands 6ft 4in tall - spends his days training alongside unbeaten former English light heavyweight champion. Troy Jones, 12-0 (6 KOs). The two have become friends, sparring partners and gym mates.
Jones and Hyde have come into each other’s orbits at the perfect time. They are ambitious and equally as determined to help each other as they are to one up their teammate.
Hyde sees how much his son is benefitting from the quality day in, day out work.
“Excellent, it's perfect. To be honest, they complement each other,” he said.
“It's good but both fighters will tell you that they get used to each other and they're very friendly as well, even though they have competitive spars, so it's good when they go to other gyms as well. They’ve been travelling around to other gyms now.
“A happy fighter is a dangerous fighter. I know it's a cliche, but it’s true. He's very happy, I mean, he loves it over here. He goes home every weekend, it’s only 50 minutes on a flight. It's a perfect match and a perfect mix.”
