Shields (19-0, 4 KOs) is on the hunt for a big fight after stopping Kaye Scott on August 15 to win the WBC and WBA 160-pound titles on her return to the division.

The Ring's No. 1 middleweight may have found that in new Ring Magazine 154-pound champion Cameron, who added the WBA and WBC titles to her WBO crown with a unanimous decision victory over Mikaela Mayer in Birmingham on Saturday.

Cameron, previously undisputed at junior welterweight, has confirmed to The Ring that official discussions have since begun after the pair exchanged messages on Twitter last weekend.

“My promoters MVP are actually already talking to Claressa Shields’ team because she said she wanted to fight me,” Cameron said.

“I said I’d love that opportunity so MVP have got straight on to her team. There have been phone calls since my fight at the weekend so the ball is rolling and it’s moving quite quickly.

“I thought I was going to be resting but I’m already straight into a big fight.”

It had been suggested Cameron (23-1, 8 KOs) and Mayer were locked into an immediate rematch via their initial fight contract, presumably precluding any chance of a Shields fight next.

But 35-year-old Cameron said: “I wasn’t too sure on that but Mayer was talking about fighting Claressa straight after me. She wasn’t focused on the job in hand which was me.

“It’s exactly why I never overlook my opponents because if you don’t win you look stupid. This is the perfect example because Mayer was talking about fighting Claressa and hadn’t even got through me.

“So now I see it as winner stays on and Claressa wants to fight someone coming off a win. I stepped up to the challenge and talks are underway. MVP are delighted because it’s a huge fight.

“If they are going to allow it to happen, Mikaela Mayer can wait. The rematch can still happen but she can wait.”

Although Cameron unified the junior middleweight division by beating Mayer, both agreed to weigh in at 148 pounds or below for their fight.

Cameron weighed 151 pounds in her first divisional outing, beating Michaela Kotaskova over 10 rounds on April 5.

Although she says she will not gain weight ahead of a clash with 31-year-old Shields—a former world heavyweight champion who once weighed over 174 pounds for a fight—Cameron is happy for the contest to be at middleweight.

“I do know from talks that she won’t come lower than 160," she said. "But it’s Claressa Shields and I’m happy to accept that. I wouldn't put on any weight, it would make me slow and sluggish so I'd just give that weight away.”

“I’m rolling the dice and daring to be great. It’s about legacy; I’ve boxed everyone and stepped up to every challenge that came my way. This fight is very exciting and it will be incredible if it can happen, really feel like I would have cemented my career.”
