From just a skills standpoint, George Kambosos respects Richardson Hitchins. His jab is deadly, his movement is eye-catching, and his ring IQ is up there with the best of them. But when it comes to that red beating organ inside of his chest, Kambosos has questions.
After years of making the lightweight limit, Kambosos (22-3, 10 KOs) gave his body a reprieve earlier this month, and the ring return came against unknown contender Jake Wyllie.
Early on, the former unified lightweight champ had the obvious edge. Wyllie was unable to see his shots coming and his own offense was tenuous and predictable. Things changed, however, at the midway point when Kambosos and Wyllie clashed heads.
Ostensibly bothered by it, Kambosos stood more in the pocket, leading to some crowd-pleasing moments. Getting the win was salient and the number one agenda on his mind but doing so while trading bombs left Kambosos bloodied but smiling from ear to ear.
Next up for Kambosos following his unanimous decision win is most likely Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) on June 21st, in New York City. For years now, Kambosos has studied Hitchins. In fact, he may know his man’s social security number and address at this point.
Exaggeration aside, Kambosos knows what to expect and what not to. The way he sees it, he won’t get a chance to tuck his chin down, clinch his fists, and go to war. Considering that Hitchins is a pure boxer, Kambosos is preparing to put on his track shoes.
“He ain’t gonna sit there,” explained Kambosos to FightHub TV. “If Hitchins got balls, let's fight in the middle of the ring and let’s see. I love a war.”
