George Kambosos isn’t losing any sleep over Richardson Hitchins’ power as he gears up for a summer fight with the IBF super lightweight champion.

On Saturday night, Kambosos, 22-3 (10 KOs), worked his way to a unanimous twelve round decision over late replacement, Jake Wyllie, 16-2 (15 KOs), in Sydney, Australia.

The solid but unspectacular win gave the former unified lightweight champion a much needed shot in the arm after the eleventh round stoppage defeat he suffered to IBF lightweight champion, Vasyl Lomachenko, last May and it also cleared the Australian’s path to a title fight with Hitchins, 19-0 (7 KOs).

Tension has been steadily building between the two over the past few months and although Hitchins - who is ranked at number three by The Ring - has bitten his tongue since the fight, Kambosos wasted little time in delivering a message directly to the New Yorker.

“I'll see you soon,” he told Louis Hart for The Ring. “I know you'll get a little bit of confidence from today but you ain't anything like that. Very soon I'll come back to New York or Las Vegas and take your belt. I know you hate that ten pound [rehydration] with the IBF so it's gonna be great for me. Let’s go. You better not run, fight me like he did today.”

Wyllie had bought tickets to watch Kambosos fight on Saturday and was looking forward to going along as a fan. Instead, he found himself right at the centre of the action after stepping in to replace Daud Yordan when the Indonesian was struck down with illness.

The Australian champion gave 31 year-old Kambosos a good workout and the opportunity to experience exactly what it feels like to trade shots with a hungry determined super lightweight.

Despite the win over Wyllie being his first significant fight at 140lbs, Kambosos sits at number three in the IBF rankings and he will now step straight into a tough looking test against the skillful Hitchins - whom Kambosos has imaginatively renamed.

“It felt good. It was my first fight ever at 140lbs,” he said.

“It's all experience coming off the Lomachenko fight at 135lbs. My first time making the weight and reloading from the weight and y'know, got the first one out from the Australian champion. Bring on Shitchins. I don't think Shitchins style is anything like Jake Wyllie. He’s similar to [Gustavo] Lemos who comes forward, we saw what he did with Hitchins so we’re gonna come with the right gameplan and win that belt.”

Kambosos may have been happy with the win and excited at the prospect of becoming a two-weight world champion but the nasty gash he suffered over his left eye after a ninth round clash of heads looks certain to hamper his preparations.

Eddie Hearn told The Ring that Hitchins will make the first defence of his IBF title on June 21st regardless of who ends up standing in the opposite corner.

Kambosos doesn’t foresee the cut causing him too many problems and doesn’t seem overly concerned by the prospect of taking on Hitchins.

“Brilliant,” he said when asked about the relatively quick turnaround.

“We’ll have a week or so off, let this small cut obviously heal up and then we'll go to work. We’ll go to New York or Las Vegas and we’ll be ready.

“Hitchins does not punch nowhere near this young kid [Wyllie] does. How many knockouts does Hitchins have? Two or three? He can't punch. I felt good though. Not once was I ever rocked. Sometimes I let him work a little too much but the only time was the clash of heads. Big respect to the kid, I wanna help the kid out.”
