The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office has dropped domestic violence charges against lightweight titleholder Gervonta Davis after the alleged victim, the mother of Davis' two children, refused to cooperate with authorities, TMZ reported on Tuesday.
The domestic violence case against Gervonta Davis has been dropped after the alleged victim declined to prosecute, TMZ reported on Tuesday.
Davis was accused of hitting his ex-girlfriend in the head and slapping her on June 15 in South Florida and was arrested and jailed on July 11. The alleged victim, the mother of Davis' two children, told Doral Police that the incident occurred after a verbal argument as he was picking up his children.
Davis was released from the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $10,000 bond. Davis was charged with one count of battery and a court hearing was scheduled for July 29. An arraignment had been set for Aug. 12.
The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office released the following statement Tuesday, according to TMZ:
"This case was dropped as the victim is declining to prosecute, per her victim attorney, Lindsey Chase, Esq. and her sentiments were directly confirmed by the Assistant State Attorney handling the prosecution.
"The witness to the incident, who is the victim’s mother, also failed to cooperate and failed [to appear] after being subpoenaed for a prefile conference on Thursday, August 7. Follow up attempts to contact the witness (mother) via phone were unsuccessful.
"The incident itself was not observed by the police officer who had been called to the scene, eliminating him as a possible witness to what had transpired."
Davis, 30, has had multiple run-ins with the law in recent years. According to the Baltimore Banner, the WBA lightweight champion remains on probation following a 2020 hit-and-run incident that injured four people in Baltimore.
Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) was supposed to be gearing up this summer for a rematch against Lamont Roach Jr., originally on June 21 and later on August 16, but the fight was never announced.
Davis and Roach fought to a controversial majority draw in March.
