Fighters often don't pay when they lose bets made at press conferences, but that didn't stop Jake Paul and Gervonta Davis from wagering seven figures at their press conference Tuesday in Miami.
Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Jake Paul raised the stakes Tuesday night.
During their press conference in Miami, influencer Adin Ross said he believes Paul will win their exhibition and asked how much he should bet on it. The bet rapidly escalated from $250,000 to $2 million on who will win their exhibition bout on Nov. 14 at Miami's Kaseya Center on Netflix.
After some back and forth, Davis and Paul shook on their bet. Davis also tried to coax Most Valuable Promotions CEO Nakisa Bidarian into a bet to no avail.
Paul and Davis will face off in a 10-round exhibition at a catchweight of 195 pounds. They’ll also wear 12-ounce gloves, and there will be three state commission-approved judges to score the fight.
In a sanctioned fight, Davis would normally wear eight-ounce gloves, while Paul would wear 10-ounce gloves.
Davis, 30, who stands at 5-foot-5½, last fought at 135 pounds and has weighed as much as 140 pounds in his career. Paul, 28, is 6-foot-1 and has competed mostly at the cruiserweight limit of 200 pounds, but he has also fought at heavyweight and weighed as much as 227¼ pounds. He has also been as light as 183.75 pounds in his career.
Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs), a hard-hitting southpaw from Baltimore, Maryland, still holds the WBA lightweight title. He’s coming off his first professional fight that didn’t end with him getting his hand raised, a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach on March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Had Davis taking a knee in the ninth round been ruled a knockdown by referee Steve Willis, Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) would have won by decision.
