Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is on course to return to the ring this fall.
The Ring has learned that the reigning WBA lightweight titlist is poised to headline a Nov. 2 PBC on Prime Video Pay-Per-View event. Other details remain in the works, though TGB Promotions has a venue hold for the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Baltimore’s Davis (30-0, 28 knockouts) is The Ring’s No. 8-rated pound-for-pound fighter.
The time frame is in line with Davis’ pursued unification bouts versus IBF titlist Vasiliy Lomachenko and WBC beltholder Shakur Stevenson. Neither option has panned out, for various reasons.
Lomachenko (18-3, 12 knockouts) opted to sit out the remainder of 2024. The news was a buzzkill, as the attractive matchup would have also come with The Ring championship at stake. Davis and Lomachenko are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, at lightweight.
Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs), No. 4 at 135, was ordered to next face William Zepeda, The Ring’s No. 3-rated lightweight.
Should the fight move forward on November 2, Davis will fight for the second time this year. In his last bout on June 15, Davis knocked out mandatory challenger Frank Martin in the eighth round.
At the time of the stoppage, Davis was up 67-66 on all three judges’ scorecards.
Prior to that defense, Davis, had not fought in almost 14 months. He knocked out Ryan Garcia in the seventh round last April 21 in Las Vegas. Three months prior, he stopped Hector Luis Garcia, after nine rounds.
Martin and both Garcias were unbeaten at the time they fought Davis. So, too, were Rolando Romero and Mario Barrios, with all five fights ending inside the distance within his last six starts.
Davis’ recent accomplishments have not gone unnoticed as he tops The Ring’s lightweight rankings.
An opponent is expected to be revealed in the coming weeks. Davis’ team has hinted they are locked in talks with one targeted fighter but declined specifics beyond that update.
Francisco A. Salazar has written for The Ring since October 2013 and has covered boxing in Southern California and abroad since 2000. Francisco also covers boxing for the Ventura County (California) Star newspaper. He can be reached at
