Cuban boxers Guillermo Rigondeaux and Yuriorkis Gamboa will look to turn back the clock on May 2 when they co-headline an event billed as “Havana Heat” at James L. Knight Center in Miami.
The event is presented by Ron Johnson’s American Dream Presents and Nothing But Sportz and was announced during a press conference Thursday at BOXR Gym in Miami.
“Gamboa and Rigondeaux aren’t just accomplished fighters, they represent a boxing tradition that has produced some of the toughest, smartest, and most respected champions in the sport,” Johnson said in a statement. “Cuban boxing carries real history, discipline, and pride. To present both of these men on the same night, in a city like Miami that understands that culture, is something I take seriously. It’s an honor to bring two legends to this stage.”
Rigondeaux, 46, and Gamboa, 44, are Cuban Olympic gold medalists who had world title runs as professionals.
Rigondeaux (23-3, 16 KOs) is a former Ring, WBA and WBO junior featherweight champion who enjoyed his height in 2013 by scoring a career-best unanimous decision against a pound-for-pound ranked version of Nonito Donaire. Rigondeaux was undefeated through the first 17 fights until he met his match in Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2017, quitting after six frustrating rounds.
Rigondeaux has fought just eight times since then and last graced the ring in November 2024 to score his third straight knockout win.
Gamboa (30-5, 18 KOs), meanwhile, is on a three-fight losing streak against Gervonta Davis, Devin Haney and Isaac Cruz and hasn't won a fight since 2019.
Gamboa had a solid run as a featherweight champion over 15 years ago, but struggled once he stepped up to lightweight, beginning with his first career loss against Terence Crawford in 2014.
