Nearly 700 pounds of mass will grace the ring when touted undefeated Armenian prospect Gurgen Hovhannisyan faces Dajuan Calloway in an eight-round heavyweight fight on April 18 as part of a Boxlab Promotions show at the Caribe Royale in Orlando on DAZN.
Fellow undefeated heavyweight upstart and Cuban southpaw Olympian Dainier Pero is also set to be featured on the card against an opponent yet to be determined. Christopher Díaz, Kevin Hayler Brown, and Hendri Cedeno will be fighting on the card as well.
“We’re really looking forward to seeing the upward progression of Hovhannisyan and Pero,” Boxlab Promotions CEO Amaury Piedra told The Ring in an interview. “We think both of these heavyweights have tremendous opportunities once there is a transition in the heavyweight division. We see them being big players.”
Hovhannisyan (7-0, 6 KOs) will return to the site where he endured the toughest test of his four-year career last time out in December when he outlasted Patrick Mailata in a hard-fought eight-round majority decision win.
Hovhannisyan was wobbled a handful of times by the durable Samoan, and the bruising around his eye proved that the 275-pounder has to clean up defensive deficiencies in order to successfully keep climbing the contender ladder.
Hovhannisyan is a 27-year-old based in Los Angeles who is trained by Hall of Fame coach Joe Goossen and managed by Vartan Torosyan. Hovhannisyan has been regarded as having a high ceiling, as his slick and hard-hitting skills have been featured on PBC shows, one of which was a stoppage win against Michael Coffie in just his fourth professional fight in 2022. Hovhannisyan was supposed to build off that momentum and face former IBF champion Charles Martin in 2023 on the Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia undercard but was forced to withdraw from the fight two weeks prior due to a rib injury.
Looking to play prospect buster is the 400-pound behemoth Dajuan Calloway (10-3, 8 KOs), a 33-year-old from Warrensville Heights, Ohio who previously played football as an offensive lineman for North Carolina Central University.
It remains to be seen if Calloway is biting off more than he can chew, however, because he’s also scheduled to fight Sunday in New York against undefeated Irishman Thomas Carty.
