Zuffa Boxing and UFC head Dana White and Matchroom Boxing chief Eddie Hearn have been at each other’s throats in recent months.
So much so that the arguments and diatribes have led to both promoters challenging each other to an actual fight. They are also jockeying for position to be a chief participant and lead promoter for the upcoming bout between heavyweights Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.
The back-and-forth verbal battle between White and Hearn has led Turki Alalshikh, owner of The Ring and chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, to play peacemaker amid the ongoing hostilities.
"I'll do my best to have a meeting soon between my brothers Dana White, Nick Khan, Frank Warren, Eddie Hearn, and my partners and friends DAZN to make peace and revolution for boxing," Alalshikh said earlier this month. "I hope I succeed, and boxing fans see the white smoke rise from the chimney."
On Saturday, Hearn addressed attempts at making peace with White while promoting the Jaron Ennis-Xander Zayas fight at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
“Not really [can we find common ground and peace], if I'm honest with you,” Hearn told DAZN’s Chris Mannix. “I mean, look, we're all stubborn people. We’re all competitors. Those guys are used to getting their own way. They've never really had any competition. They don't like criticism.
"Well, if that's the case, you'd better get out of boxing real quick, because it's a long, drawn-out war, and it's given me fire in my stomach every single day. And I love competing. It doesn't have to get personal, it doesn't have to get nasty. But know one thing: We're gonna win. And it will lead us to producing great shows for DAZN. I mean, look at tonight.
“There is room for everyone in this sport, but they don’t want room for everybody. And let me tell you something: [There are] a lot of stubborn people in this sport, and I'm one of them. There's another one who’s about 96 years old, called Bob Arum, and there's Frank Warren. These people are long in the tooth, and they're great competitors.
"So, listen, again, Turki Alalshikh is our partner. We do a lot of business together. We'll always listen to what he's got to say – peace one day, war for now.”
Hearn later elaborated on his comments during a press conference after Ennis stopped Zayas in the seventh round to become the unified 154-pound champion.
“[Alalshikh] wants to bring everybody together. It's very difficult because I don't really want to do that, if I'm honest,” Hearn said. “But we're partners with him, and you know, I'm not going to say, 'No, I'm not coming. I'm not going to listen.'
"We'll listen, but I'm not really interested in standing in a room and everyone putting their hands in the middle and going, ‘Yeah, here we are. We're at peace. We're moving forward.' Because then, when you leave the room, everybody starts again anyway. It's like a real-life war negotiation, and you see what happens. So I'm enjoying it, to be honest with you.
“Regarding Fury against Joshua, the contract is very clear on so many different levels, and the only way things can change in the contract is with Joshua and me agreeing to change that. So if we want to start again and renegotiate the contract, we'll have those conversations with Turki Alalshikh, but it'll be a lot easier just to carry on doing the fight in the UK, where it should be. But first of all, we have to win on July 25 [against Kristian Prenga].
“I don't want to be arrogant enough to say we hold all the aces, but we've got the contract that we wanted, and we negotiated, and we don't really want to change anything in that contract. But let's have a chat, and see where we get to.”
