Those who know Gervonta Davis, and even those who have a faint relationship with him, will say the same thing. Something was off.
Those who know Gervonta Davis, and even those who have a faint relationship with him, will say the same thing.
Something was off.
Normally, Davis is relentless, powerful, ruthless, and clutch at all times. But, when he took on Lamont Roach on March 1st, the Baltimore native came out listless and unsure of himself, leading to a majority decision draw.
As each second ticked off the clock, Henry Garcia, father of Ryan Garcia, inched closer and closer to his television set. While doing so, his eyes widened to the point where they were protruding from his skull.
Garcia knows how good Davis is. Or should we say, how good he used to be? When Davis brutally stopped his son back in 2023, he admitted that he was a special fighter. But that contest took place two years ago, back when Davis was a bit younger and fresher according to Garcia. Now, considering the mileage on his odometer, Garcia is convinced that he’s lost more than just a step.
“His age is catching up to him,” said Garcia to Fight Hub TV. “The legs aren't there as they used to be. He switched his trainer, which could be another factor.”
The trainer switch was a head-scratcher. Usually, Calvin Ford is the head man in charge. Against Roach, he was seemingly demoted to second in command while Barry Hunter took the lead.
Ultimately, Davis is well aware that he didn’t hand in a peak performance but he might be on the verge of redeeming himself as a rematch could be in the works. That decision, of course, is firmly in his corner. But from Garcia’s point of view, Davis needs to run things back whether he likes it or not. Simply put, in no way, shape, or form can Davis walk around like a man who deserved the victory.
“There’s no way you can say that Tank won,” continued Garcia. “There’s no way.”
