Esteemed trainer Abel Sanchez believes the rematch between WBO heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley will end similarly to the first slugfest five months ago.
Dubois (23-3, 22 KOs) rebounded from first and third-round knockdowns to dominate and detonate Wardley (20-1-1, 19 KOs) in the 11th round of a brutal bout that became increasingly one-sided as the fight went on. While the chin of Dubois was tested, Wardley's face was left disfigured as he suffered the first loss of his career.
"I would have liked to see Wardley get a couple of fights between this rematch and come into this fight as a winner off of a tuneup, and off of a positive note instead of a fighter who's coming in off a stoppage loss," Sanchez told The Ring. "Wardley has a lot of talent and is a big puncher, but he's inexperienced. He didn't have a big amateur career, and now he's learning on the job against the elite level. That's got to be difficult for him.
"It's a 12-round fight. If you're not prepared to go the full distance at a clip that exceeds what you've done in the past, you're gonna get tired. You're going to wear out. It's not so much that you're getting beat up, but you're getting caught with shots because you've slowed down, even for a millisecond. The best championship fighters and high-level professionals are going to be able to take advantage of that."
Wardley came into the clash against Dubois having fought past the eighth round just four times, all while authoring back-to-back, come-from-behind late-round knockouts, respectively, against Joseph Parker and Justis Huni in the previous two fights.
On the other hand, Dubois has picked up big wins against the likes of Anthony Joshua, Jarrell Miller, and Sanchez's charge, current IBF heavyweight champion Filip Hrgovic. The Londoner has also lost by stoppage three times, against Ring champ Oleksandr Usyk (twice), and Joe Joyce.
"Yes, Dubois is a little bit chinny, but he's experienced," Sanchez said. "He's not going all out. It may be a boring fight. It may not be the fight that Wardley wants, but it's a fight that he can win that way. Wardley is not going to win going toe-to-toe against Dubois. Wardley had great knockouts when he was losing a lot of rounds. So that just showed you the inexperience that I'm talking about. If he's banking on one shot, it's not going to happen in every fight, especially against Dubois.
"I would say it's in Wardley's best interest to take every round, and not to come out gangbusters and try to knock Dubois out. Wardley needs to figure out that the fight is gonna go 12 rounds and he just needs to win round by round, and not necessarily by throwing big punches, but just by outworking Dubois. Maybe Wardley can catch Dubois with a good shot again and drop him for a two-point round. But Wardley just needs to work every round like he's ready to go 15 rounds instead of just trying to do what Moses Ituma tried to do with Hrgovic."
Sanchez, who was the architect of Hrgovic's title-winning stoppage of Wardley's stablemate Moses Itauma in August, also suggested that Dubois should be ready for a dynamite dance much sooner in order to avoid any early wobbles.
"Dubois is a slow starter," Sanchez said. "He needs to be more of a boxer in the beginning just to get warmed up and keep Wardley on his defensive. Dubois should get warmed up quicker so that he's not caught cold. I think that is his problem in the fights – he gets dropped when he starts cold. Dubois needs to be warmed up like it's the next round from the last fight against Wardley. But I still think that Dubois beats Wardley in this next fight."
