Michael Jordan issued the two-word fax “I’m back” in 1995 to signal the end of his 17-month retirement from basketball.

Thirty years later, Devin Haney is taking a similar page from the legendary baller’s playbook, teasing his return from a long hiatus following a tumultuous tilt against Ryan Garcia in April.

Haney announced “I’m back” last Saturday on X, adding that his return to the ring will be in March. The development arrives after Haney agreed Thursday to enroll in comprehensive, year-round blood and urine testing for performance-enhancing drugs by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.

As for exactly when Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) will return, against whom, at what weight, and with which partners he’ll be working with remains to be seen. Nascent boxing streaming platform BLK Prime added to the conversation Haney kickstarted on X in a since-deleted post that the fight will be staged on its platform on March 25.

The 26-year-old Bay Area-born, Las Vegas-bred boxer and former undisputed lightweight champion had a forgettable 2024 campaign drenched in drama.

Haney took a break from the sport following his controversial clash against Garcia, who scored three knockdowns and won a majority decision but the result was changed to a no contest and Garcia handed a year-long suspension after testing positive for the PED ostarine.

Haney sued Garcia in September for battery, breach of contract, and fraud.

In June, Top Rank won a $2.42 million purse bid to stage Haney’s mandatory WBC title defense against Sandor Martin, but the fight never came to fruition due to Haney’s disinterest in the package. One week after Top Rank was awarded the rights to stage Haney-Martin, the WBC downgraded Haney to its champion.

Haney is currently Ring Magazine’s No. 1 ranked fighter at 140 pounds and the No. 10 ranked fighter on the Pound for Pound list.
