It will mark the first time he has fought outside of Mexico. All but one of his fights have taken place in his home state Yucatan, and the one outside was in nearby Campeche.

In a bid to level up, The Ring's No. 10 strawweight has flown over 7,000 miles to contest the vacant WBO interim 105-pound crown.

"This is a great opportunity for me," Acosta (17-0, 6 KOs) told The Ring. "This is the biggest fight of my career. I made good preparation in Mexico; training for two months. I know he's a lefty and trained with left handers, so I am ready."

The 27-year-old expects to give the local crowd a fun and engaging fight. Their title contest will feature on a Teiken Promotions event headlined by the Takuma Inoue-Tenshin Nasukawa rematch for WBC bantamweight honors.

"I will fight in the ring. I won't run, he won't win. We want a big fight in the middle of the ring," Acosta said.

Having turned pro just as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the world, Acosta knows what this fight could do for his career.

"This is the first step for my career," he said. "If I win, I know more big fights are coming. I am relaxed and know I will win this Sunday."

Memo Brito of Zanfer Promotions, who co-promotes Acosta with Mario Abraham's MaxBoxing, is confident his boxer can cause the upset and become the latest Yucatan fighter to become world champion.

"We always want to win title fights and this is a big opportunity of course," he said. "The most important thing is he needs to work this Sunday. We expect to win," said Brito. "Of course, we want to go back to Mexico with the world title.

"This is for Merida and Yucatan, they want a world champion, the last one was [WBC junior lightweight champion Miguel] Berchelt, this is the new face."

Matsumoto is The Ring's No. 4-ranked strawweight and won the Japanese title in his fourth fight, scoring a seventh-round stoppage of Katsuki Mori in September 2024.

Since then, the 28-year-old has moved into international level before twice beating compatriot Yuni Takada (TD 5/UD 12).
