Carlos Adames isn’t easing his way into the super middleweight division.
The Ring’s Mike Coppinger reported Monday on "Inside The Ring" that IBF super middleweight champion Osleys Iglesias and Adames are in advanced discussions to fight later this year, likely in September.
Iglesias is The Ring’s No. 2-ranked super middleweight, while Adames is the WBC middleweight champion and The Ring’s No. 1-ranked middleweight. They exchanged words over social media about a potential fight in April.
Adames (25-1-1, 18 KOs) would be fighting above 160 pounds for the first time in his career. In his last title defense, the 32-year-old from Elias Pina, Dominican Republic, dropped Austin “Ammo” Williams en route to winning a one-sided unanimous decision on March 21 in Orlando.
After the win, Adames said he was open to facing anyone from 154 to 168 pounds, including Iglesias.
Iglesias (15-0, 14 KOs) has emerged as a boogeyman in the super middleweight division and won the then-vacant IBF super middleweight title with an eighth-round stoppage of Pavel Silyagin on April 9 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Iglesias, a 28-year-old southpaw from Havana, Cuba, has won nine straight fights by knockout.
