The build-up to Osleys Iglesias vs. Pavel Silyagin felt more like a potential coronation than a world title fight.
Iglesias didn’t disappoint.
“The Tornado” ran right through Silyagin, stopping him in the eighth round to become the IBF super middleweight champion on Thursday in the main event of an Eye of the Tiger-promoted card at Montreal Casino in Montreal. The stoppage win was Iglesias’ ninth in a row.
With Iglesias’ victory, Eye of the Tiger Promotions now has two of the three world champions at 168 pounds, joining WBC titleholder Christian Mbilli. Armando Resendiz holds the WBA title, while Hamzah Sheeraz and Alem Begic will fight for the vacant WBO title on May 23 on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk vs. Rico Verhoeven card in Egypt on DAZN PPV.
It didn’t take long for Iglesias (15-0, 14 KOs) to set the tone. Around the midway point of the first round, the Cuban southpaw connected with a right uppercut that rocked Silyagin (16-1-1, 7 KOs) and caused his right eye to nearly swell shut almost immediately. The Russian went on his bike for the rest of the round as he sought to find some breathing room in a ring that likely felt even smaller than it looked.
Iglesias, The Ring’s No. 2-ranked super middleweight, stayed in control in the second, connecting with power shots as Silyagin stayed on the move. In the third, Silyagin, 32, showed signs of working his way back into the fight, as he was able to slow down Iglesias’ attack a bit by staying on the move and tying him up on the inside while connecting with some of his most meaningful shots of the fight. Still, Iglesias, 28, did the more eye-catching work.
That pattern persisted for much of the fight, as Silyagin moved and clinched. The Russian did some good work and occasionally stood his ground or went on the front foot, but it paled in comparison to Iglesias’ ability to pot shot and land power shots.
Iglesias began to do more damage in the eighth round as he battered Silyagin with his two-fisted attack. A dejected Silyagin, who showed the effects of the fight with swelling under both eyes and a bloody nose, returned to his corner after the eighth round. Not long after, his corner stopped the fight.
Here are the rest of the results from the undercard.
